Transplanting Wheat through Hydroponics Technology: 

 

A Novel Concept in Wheat Farming

    

Wheat is traditionally sown by broadcasting seed or more recently, using a drill machine. However, it has never been transplanted manually or mechanically. Ayurvet Research Foundation successfully raised wheat nursery fit for transplanting through hydroponics.  

  

The region like North – East or other parts of Country where the sowing is delayed by any reasons, the technology can provide the solution by providing a readymade nursery and save time. The same growth in the field condition will take approximately one month.

Trial Conducted in Rabi-13-14

 

Initial experiments were conducted at various locations to demonstrate the technology and evaluate the performance of wheat.

Multi-location trials for wheat transplanting were organized at the following locations

  1. Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana
  2. Directorate of Wheat Research, Karnal
  3. Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi
  4. IARI Farmer, Safedo, Panipat
  5. Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Karnal
  6. Ayurvet Research Foundation, Sonipat

Key Results and findings:--

A. Saving of Seeds:

 Use of Hydroponics technology had saved 30% wheat seeds in comparison to conventional system of cultivation.

  1. In conventional generally 40 kg per acre seed is used while in hydroponics 28 kg seeds were sufficient for transplanting one acre land. This helps in saving of Rs. 300 per acre (Seed Rate is Rs. 25/Kg approx)

 

B. Input Vs Output Ratio

   The Yield has been compared basis of seed input and output used in both farming system:

  1. The average ratio of input Vs output of seeds in conventional varies from 42-55 times while in hydroponics it is   53-85 times. ( Refer Table 1)

This clearly indicates that higher conversion is obtained in hydroponics

 

D.  Growth &Yield Parameters

  1. In general number of effective tillers per plant is 20-30% more in hydroponics
  2. The plant population is lower by 30%-50% in hydroponics

 

The hydroponically grown manually transplanted wheat at IARI Farmer’s Pritam Singh field gave higher yield in comparison to Conventional.

  1. 6% higher yield in Variety HS 544
  2. 19% in Variety HD -2967
  3. In sugarcane Institute, hydroponics was manual transplanted on 28th Jan 2014. hydroponic seedling survived well & given a substantially good yield of 13 Q/acre
