Importance of green feed for horses

Importance of green feed for horses cannot be overemphasized. Green feed forms a major part of the horse’s daily diet. It is the best source of energy, protein, vitamins, minerals and fibre that are essential for the proper maintenance of the horse’s body. Besides this green feed also provides other important benefits:

  • Live enzymes and microbes present in green feed aid in digestion
  • Green feed contains high moisture content and provides excellent hydration, which helps in flushing toxins from the body

Green fodder contains essential fatty acids such as omega 3 and omega 6, which help in the prevention of various health conditions including arthritis, asthma, eczema, inflammation after exercise and ulcerative colitis

Challenges for green feed for horses

Availability: Due to decreasing arable land in India, humans and livestock are fighting for the same piece of land to meet their nutrition needs. Making available green feed throughout the year is a big challenge in terms of cost and quality

Consistent quality: If the feed does not provide the essential nutrients in the right proportion, it needs to be supplemented with missing nutrients, thus increasing the overall feeding cost. Presence of dust, mold, weeds and foreign debris may reduce the quality of fodder. Also the quality of green feed is decreasing due to soil degradation.

High Cost: Seasonal green grasses are available at a reasonable price in the limited months of the year. In the remaining months, their cost is very high. Extreme weather patterns, high oil prices and import hassles also affect the cost of feed.

Weeds and weedicides: Weeds pose a big challenge for productive crops as they compete with them for space, nutrients, water, light and seriously affect the crop growth and quality. Bathua, canary grass and wild oats are most common weeds in barley crop.

Use of Chemicals: Plant protection products such as pesticides, insecticides and other chemicals often leave residues on plants. These plants when ingested may lead to various health hazards. Aphids are the most common pests, found in barley crop.

Presence of Parasites: Conventional green fodder may contain parasitic infestation, which may affect health and lead to poor growth and performance. Parasites are known to have a negative impact on animal health and reproductive efficiency.
